# Italic in Claude

> Connect Italic to Claude to search, recap and save your voice notes, and review what your workflows drafted.

Italic works in Claude on the web, Claude Desktop, the Claude mobile apps,
Cowork and Claude Code. Claude searches your Clips and Memos and answers from
their text, saves notes from the conversation, and shows what your workflows
drafted, through Italic's MCP server. Italic shares text, never audio, and
Claude reaches only the Italic account you connect.

## Connect Italic [#connect-italic]

<Steps>
  <Step title="Add Italic">
    In Claude, open [**Customize → Connectors**](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors), choose **+**,
    then **Add custom connector**. Name it Italic and enter:

    ```text
    https://app.italic.com/api/v1/mcp
    ```

    Or open the [prefilled dialog](https://claude.ai/customize/connectors?modal=add-custom-connector&connectorName=Italic&connectorUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.italic.com%2Fapi%2Fv1%2Fmcp).
    Leave **Advanced settings** empty.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Sign in to Italic">
    Choose **Connect**. Italic's connection page opens: sign in, check what
    Claude may do, and choose **Allow selected permissions**.
  </Step>
  <Step title="Use it in a chat">
    Italic appears among your connectors in the chat's **+** menu. Turn it on
    there if it's off.
  </Step>
</Steps>

On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds Italic first under
**Organization settings → Connectors**, and then each member connects their
own Italic account. Free plans can add one custom connector. On a phone, add
Italic on the web or in Claude Desktop first.

## Ask Claude [#ask-claude]

- "What did I say about the Lisbon trip?"
- "What's my latest Italic Clip?"
- "Recap my Italic notes from this week."
- "Save these meeting notes to Italic."
- "Rename my book club memo to October book club."
- "What drafts are waiting in Italic?"
- "Open Italic."

Claude asks before Italic's tools run until you allow them, and always
before anything that edits or deletes. Approving a workflow draft sends it through the account
it was drafted for, such as your Gmail; Claude asks which draft first.

"Open Italic" shows Italic in the conversation as a card. Choose
**Open Italic** for Home with search, recording details, Devices,
Settings and Workflows.

## The Italic plugin [#the-italic-plugin]

The Italic plugin adds skills that help Claude use Italic well: recapping a
period into decisions, to-dos and open questions, and reviewing drafts one at
a time. In Claude Code:

```text
/plugin install italic --marketplace ShopItalic/claude-plugin
```

## Claude Code [#claude-code]

```sh
claude mcp add --transport http italic https://app.italic.com/api/v1/mcp
```

Then run `/mcp` and choose **Authenticate**.

## Permissions and disconnecting [#permissions-and-disconnecting]

On Italic's connection page you choose what Claude may do: read and search
recording text, save, edit and delete recordings, see and change your
profile, saved devices and preferences, see your workflows and connected
apps, turn workflows on or off, and approve or discard drafts.

To disconnect, open Italic's **Connectors → Agents → Claude** and choose
**Disconnect**, or remove Italic in Claude's **Customize → Connectors**.
Disconnecting in Italic takes effect at once. To change permissions,
disconnect and connect again.

## Troubleshooting [#troubleshooting]

- **"Couldn't reach the MCP server"**: check the URL is exactly
  `https://app.italic.com/api/v1/mcp`, with no trailing slash.
- **"Authorization with the MCP server failed"**: the connection page was
  closed or timed out. Choose **Connect** again.
- **Claude says Italic lacks a permission**: disconnect Italic and connect it
  again, allowing that permission.
- **Italic's app shows nothing after reloading a chat**: ask "Open Italic"
  again.
