iPhone

The Italic app on iPhone records Clips and Memos, connects your devices, and brings notifications, Live Activities and Apple Intelligence.

The Italic app is the center of Italic on iPhone. It records Clips and Memos, transcribes them on your iPhone, and is the only app that talks to your Sudo, Dex and Glyph. It needs iOS 18 or later.

Not available yet: the Italic app isn't on the App Store yet. It's in public beta on TestFlight. In the web app, choose your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Downloads, and open Join the beta on your iPhone.

The bar at the bottom has four tabs, with Record beside it: Home for your recordings, Chat for your conversation with Italic, Tasks for drafts and questions waiting for you (Tasks), and Profile, shown as your photo, for your account and settings. Search opens from the top right of Home, and Ask anything above the bar asks Chat a question. Its mic speaks one instead, and Tasks has the same bar (Ask with your voice).

What only the iPhone does

  • Records with your devices. Sudo, Dex and Glyph send their recordings through your iPhone, which transcribes them. Add one on the Profile tab, with Add device, or from Home's Add a device card (App 342 and later). While a device records, Home shows a "Recording on …" strip. See Devices.
  • Adds Apple Reminders. Reminders that Italic drafts anywhere are added by your iPhone. See Apple Reminders.
  • Runs Apple Intelligence. Clean Up, titles and summaries, and Chat can run on your iPhone.
  • Notifies you, and follows workflows on the Lock Screen.
  • Starts recordings from Spotlight, Siri, the Action button and widgets. See Record.

Copy your latest Clip anywhere

Copy Latest Clip copies your newest Clip, so something you said on your Sudo becomes a message without opening Italic. Run it from Spotlight (search "Italic"), from the Shortcuts app (Italic → Copy Latest Clip), or set it on the Action button in iPhone Settings. Then paste with your usual keyboard. A Clip has to finish transcribing before you can copy it.

To copy a different Clip, use its copy button on Home.

The Italic keyboard (beta)

The Italic keyboard lists your latest Clips, newest first, so you can insert one into any text field. It's off by default. Turn it on in Profile → Keyboard → Italic Keyboard, then add it in iPhone Settings and turn on Allow Full Access. Switch to it with the globe key, and tap a Clip to insert it, or Insert Clip to insert the newest.

Widgets

Italic's widgets start a recording from your Home Screen or Lock Screen: Record Memo starts a Memo and Record Clip starts a Clip, and Record, the wide one, has a button for each. A tap opens Italic and starts recording. In App 340 and later.

To add one, touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Italic. For the Lock Screen, touch and hold it, tap Customize, then the Lock Screen and the widget area.

Notifications and Live Activities

Choose what Italic tells you in Profile → Notifications, under This iPhone:

  • New clips and memos: when a recording from one of your devices is ready. Tap it to find the recording on Home.
  • Workflow actions: when a workflow drafts something for your approval, asks you a question, acts for you, or fails. Approving from a notification asks for Face ID. See Tasks.
  • Workflow Live Activities: a workflow's progress on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island while it runs or waits for you.
  • Low Ring battery: when your Sudo's battery falls to 20% and 10%.

If iOS has notifications or Live Activities turned off for Italic, the page links you to iPhone Settings. The page also holds your Daily recap: an email of what you recorded each day, and a reminder after days with nothing recorded.

Apple Intelligence on your iPhone

On an iPhone that runs Apple Intelligence, Italic can do its writing on the iPhone itself:

  • Clean Up removes filler words from Clips and Memos. See Clean Up.
  • Titles and summaries: in Profile → Personalization → Titles & Summaries, Process with is Automatic (the default: on your iPhone when Apple Intelligence is ready, otherwise on Italic's servers), Apple on-device (only on your iPhone; nothing is sent to Italic's servers) or Italic (written by Italic's servers using AI services from OpenAI and Anthropic).
  • Chat can answer on your iPhone. See Chat for how to choose.

Whichever you choose, recordings from your iPhone and your devices are transcribed on your iPhone, and their audio never leaves it.

Audio on your iPhone

A Clip keeps only its text: its audio is deleted once the text is saved, and converting a Memo to a Clip deletes the Memo's audio.

Italic keeps each Memo's original audio on your iPhone in the Recording Archive, so you can choose Transcribe again on its page. That audio isn't uploaded or included in iCloud backups. In Profile → Personalization → Recording Archive, Keep recordings chooses how long: 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or Forever, the default.

Delete audio on a Memo's Audio card removes all of that Memo's audio from Italic on your iPhone, including its Recording Archive copy. Its text stays on all your devices. A copy you saved in Files is yours and stays.

Before App 321, the Recording Archive kept Clips' audio, Convert to Clip kept a Memo's audio, and Delete audio left the Memo's archived copy. App 321 and later stop that and delete the Clip audio that was already there.

Sync

Your iPhone syncs Home with your account. See Home for Cloud Sync and conflicts, and Account for signing in.
